Traditionally, a beaded turtle amulet was given to a newborn baby girl (boys received lizard amulets). Inside, the child's umbilical cord would be stored among special herbs. The Turtle, is a symbol of long life and good health and protection. The amulet protects the baby throughout life and keeps the child grounded and connected to her mother and to Mother Earth.
